The Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA) supplies water to over 500,000 residents in Sonoma and Marin Counties. It is a wholesale provider of drinking water, distributed through municipalities and water districts, deriving most of its water supplies from the Russian River, wells, and water diverted from the Eel River. SCWA is responsible for managing water storage and releases (other than for flood management) in Lake Mendocino on the East Branch Russian River (Mendocino County) and Lake Sonoma on Dry Creek, Sonoma County. SCWA is also responsible for improving fisheries habitats in the Russian River watershed within Sonoma County.
Under orders from the State Water Board and federal fisheries managers, SCWA is rewriting the rules that govern stream flows in the Russian River watershed. Click here to read more about this effort and how it impacts the Eel River.
